Once purified, the crude oil is sent to the atmospheric distillation column, where it is separated into various products—such as methane (CH₄), propane (C₃H₈), butane (C₄H₁₀), jet fuel, gasoline, and fuel oil—based on boiling point differences. To achieve higher levels of purification and improve the processing of crude oil and light products, system-protective chemicals are used throughout the process.
